10 Christmas Party Games Ideas

(SPOT.ph) Admittedly, not all these games celebrate the spirit of Christmas, but since it is the season for merrymaking, you can be sure that you and your party guests will have the time of your life. From inebriated tilts to clean fun, laugh trips to serious competition, we have games that will fit any Christmas celebration.

So which Filipino parlour games do you have lined up in your party?

From the usual relay games down to pop-culture-inspired ones like Pinoy Henyo, here are Filipino parlour games you should consider when planning your next holiday party. Have fun!

Christmas Games: Finish the Fruitcake

Finish the Fruitcake

It is our belief that you can create something fun out of nothing. Not only is this game holiday-appropriate, it is also a great way to get rid of all those fruitcake your family has collected throughout the years. Give everyone a large slice, and the last one who finishes is punished with a penalty. More fruitcake, maybe?

Here is a group of men who take the game way too seriously. They have strategies that you might want to consider stealing.

Bite the Bag

Because limbo (or limbo rock in the Philippines) is so 2008, party planners have come up with an alternative, reverse version. In Bite the Bag, an upright paper bag is placed on the floor (those bags from Quezon City and Mandaluyong grocery stores will do). With arms behind their backs and balancing only on one leg, competitors have to bend over and pick up the bag with their mouths. Trim an inch off the bag after every round, and people who keel over, fall, or use body parts other than their mouths, are eliminated. For kicks, add some chocolate or candies in the bag for an added thrill and motivation.

We recommend that you play this game sans alcoholic influence.

Christmas Games: Suck and Blow

Suck and Blow

Nothing beats a true classic. Whether you want to spark a romance or you’re just looking for the most subtle way to get a holiday kiss, Suck and Blow is a tried-and-tested relay game that’s usually a hit at most parties. Line up your guests side by side and get a plastic card. Those used up prepaid cards will do. The trick is to pass the card around using only your lips (nope, no tongue, no teeth). The person who drops the card loses.

Gwyneth Paltrow enjoying a game of Chubby Bunny.

Chubby Bunny

Admit it: bunnies are some of the most adorable creatures that ever walked on this planet. In case you ever wanted to look like one of them, this is the game for you. In Chubby Bunny, players pop a piece of marshmallow in their mouth (without chewing or swallowing) then say “Chubby Bunny” comprehensibly.  The players have to add one marshmallow after every round until only one player is left as the Chubby Bunny.

There have been some accidents during this game. Please exercise caution.

Christmas Games: Blow the Balls

Blow the Balls

Line up two rows of plastic cups with about seven to 10 cups on each row. Remember that all cups must be of the same height. Fill the cups on one row (Row A) near the brim. On the other row (Row B), fill the cups with varying levels of water. Put ping-pong balls in all the cups in Row A. The task is to shoot the balls from Row A to their corresponding cups in Row B using sheer lung power. For added difficulty (and a bit more fun), arrange the cups in Row B at varying distances. Blow the Balls may be played in relay, too, for parties with more guests.

Christmas Games: Tipsy Statue Dance

Tipsy Statue Dance

We’re putting a little adult twist into this kiddie birthday game. Start after everyone has had a couple of beers and maybe a shot or two of tequila. You know the rules: dance when the music plays, freeze when it stops. As with most games, the fun isn’t in the winning. It’s in the ridiculous dance moves people can come up when inebriated, as well as their attempts to be still when, in fact, their heads are spinning. Remember to take another shot between rounds.

Pinoy Henyo

Nothing like clean fun at a party for accountants and librarians. You can play it as one team, but it’s better if you split the group into two. The rules are simple and so are the materials. An adjudicator writes topics on separate slips of paper. A member from the team sits across his/her teammates and the adjudicator tapes the slip on his/her forehead for everyone but him/her (the player) to see. For two minutes, the selected member will have to guess what the topic is by asking his/her teammates questions that may only be answered with a yes, no, or maybe.

Christmas Games: Sheet Ping Pong

This game may have a different “medium,” but it calls for the same amount of concentration.

Sheet Ping Pong

Get those Beer Pong balls and play something else for once. You don’t need to have a table for this resourceful parlor game. Get a bed sheet (or some other cloth), hold it at the edges, and put the ball in the middle. The rules are to rally until a person drops the ball on his end and loses a point. The game can be altered to fit more players depending on the size of the sheet.

It’s a lot harder than it looks.

Flip Cup

This popular drinking relay game is senseless fun at its most challenging. Teams are arranged in a row facing each other, between them are rows of beer in plastic cups. The two competitors at the end of the table start. After consuming their drink, they must put the cup at the edge of the table and flip it over by flicking it from the bottom with only one finger. Only until the player successfully flips it upside down can the next player progress. The first team to finish wins!

Christmas Games: Balloon Relay

Not to trounce on these children’s achievements but…Look, Ma! Our version has no hands! And with two balloons!

Balloon Relay

This game is great for big groups. Divide yourselves into two teams. Make sure each team is even-numbered as you will have to partner up. With your partner, walk-or run-side by side to the finish line while balancing a pair of balloons between yourselves. Remember, no hands! Once you reach the end, walk back to the starting line-backwards! There, you and your partner must pop the balloons together. We repeat the cardinal rule: no hands! The next pair may only move on once the preceding couple has popped both balloons.
