Ulhasnagar: An investigation was launched against a police officer accused of assaulting four young men exchanging New Year’s greetings early Saturday in Ulhasnagar.
The youths claimed that Assistant Police Inspector Subhash Bansar was drunk and upon seeing them he first tried to hit them with his bicycle and then beat them. After a video of the assault went viral on social media, Thane Police has ordered an investigation against Bansari.
“According to the results of the investigation, action will be taken against him,” said Prashant Mohti of the DCP district.
Police sources said Bansar has been on a patrol mission and is monitoring citizens who are violating the state’s ban on gatherings of five or more people in public places.
Around 1 am, in Kuchal Nagar, he noticed four young men greeting each other on the road and allegedly assaulting them. It is believed that one young man was slightly injured and another mobile phone was damaged.
One of the victims, Rohan Balerao, claimed: “We gathered outside our homes and wished each other a ‘Happy New Year’ when the officer tried to run over us with his motorbike. Before we could say anything, he started to deal with us. Another victim, Rohit Balerao, claimed that the officer appeared drunk. He refused to listen. us.”
