The American version of Mother’s Day was invented by Anna Jarvis the daughter of Ann Reeve Jarvis in her pursuit to appreciate mothers for the sacrifices that they make and to teach them how to take care of their children. Crying out through many newspapers and political platforms of how the majority of American holidays are centered on male achievements, she received financial support to host the first-ever Mother’s Day celebration in the year 1908.

After the successful celebration of her first Mother’s Day, she pushed further to see it added to the national calendar. In 1912 it began to gain momentum as many churches and towns observe Mother’s Day as an annual holiday. Her dream finally came through when President Woodrow Wilson officially approved the second Sunday of May to be the official date for Mother’s Day celebration.
