💕

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, store shelves are overflowing with gift ideas.

There’s no shortage of flowers, chocolate hearts and desserts, mugs adorned with gushing love, even a £1 engagement ring, and home accessories like plants and candles.

Candles may be a romantic gift for February 14th, but with so many different scents and colors to choose from, it can be overwhelming if you want to send one.

We decided to test some of the leading supermarket and store candles to see how they compare – and whether they’re worth the money.

We bought Valentine’s candles from B&M, Asda, Morrsions and The Range and rated them a 5 based on our impressions of how the candles look and smell.

Whether you’re celebrating with your partner, friends, or just want some well-deserved pampering, here’s our take on this year’s Valentine’s Day candles:

Morrison

With Valentine’s Day just over two weeks away, I’m sure supermarkets and stores will be full of gift ideas, but I had to visit a few stores to find Valentine’s themed candles. Maybe just the branches I tried, but Sainsbury’s, Home Bargains and Wilko all failed to deliver.

Morrison’s selection of Valentine’s Day gifts was decent, though, including three candles, one of which has sold out.

I picked up a packet of red heart tea lights, £6 for £2. Lamps have no fragrance, but they will add a romantic touch to a Valentine’s Day table setting. I would say they are best placed on a candle tray holder so you can still see the hearts, because once inside a tea light holder they look just like any other candle, albeit with a soft red glow.

I also found a ‘gin and candles’ gift set containing 50ml Gordon’s Pink Gin and gin and strawberry scented candles for £8.

The candles are made of pure clear glass with soft pink wax. The labels are pretty enough, but don’t have a high-end look overall.

It does have a light strawberry fragrance, but it is not overpowering. The smell certainly didn’t fill the room, but it was pleasant enough and the candle gave off a nice pink glow.

You can’t go wrong with gin and candles on Valentine’s Day, but overall, if you’re on a budget and want something that looks romantic, I’d say it’s a great gift.

price: I paid £2 for Red Tea Lights and £8 for the gin and candles in the store. Gin and candles are currently £7 online at Morrisons.

Candles from The Range

This candle from The Range is very sweet (Image: Emily Sleight/Liverpool ECHO)

As soon as I walked into my local Range store, I was impressed with the selection of chocolates and gifts for Easter and Valentine’s Day.

While looking for romantic Valentine’s candles, I noticed the “Strawberry Pavola” candle, which is the only candle offered in the Valentine’s section.

The candle itself looked beautiful in a lovely pale pink and Yankee candle style glass jar (minus the exorbitant price) so I was a winner.

After a sniff of the candle, I was so impressed by the sweet, almost disgusting smell of strawberries that I decided to take it home and give it a try.

I was impressed with the scent of the candle, and while it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, it definitely had a “romantic” vibe.

Once lit, it gives off a nice glow, perfect for setting the mood, and has a light strawberry scent.

The only downside is that it actually smells stronger before it ignites, but overall it’s a pretty good buy for the price.

For those who don’t want to spend more than £15 for a large candle, this ‘The Aroma’ candle from The Range is a great option, and it looks lovely too.

B&M

When I visited the local big box store at the end of January, I was shocked to find that B&M had very little stock for Valentine’s Day.

Only shower gel and fragrance gift boxes are on the shelves for Valentine’s Day, but in the “seasonal” aisle, I found more Valentine-friendly products, including “Romantic Night” three-scented candles.

It has a “very cherry berry” scent, with a different berry scent on each of the three layers.

The packaging is nothing special, mostly white, but the candle itself is beautiful as it is a pink gradient finish.

I doubt the scent of candles will be very powerful for just £1, but I keep an open mind.

When I got home, I took the candle out of the packaging and smelled a faint berry smell, but it went away almost immediately.

I lit a candle for the first time that night, but after 45 minutes I couldn’t smell anything. After 90 minutes, still no berry flavor.

The candle looks beautiful when lit, but I can’t get over the fact that it doesn’t have any smell.

I didn’t burn the candle though, and lit it the next night, hoping it might need to burn more to get the initial berry scent.

Unfortunately, the same thing happened – after 90 minutes, there was no berry flavor at all.

While B&M candles look beautiful when lit, the complete lack of smell is horrible.

Asda

I’m a little overwhelmed by Asda’s Valentine’s Day offerings as many of the shelves are empty, although more stock may arrive as the big day approaches.

Candles don’t have to be romantic themes, but there are many pink and red products on supermarket shelves, in keeping with most Valentine’s Day products.

Honestly, I bought Asda’s Harmony Silk Rose & Cotton candle because it comes in a stylish pink tin. I love beautiful products and have candles of all sorts of gorgeous designs – like seashells and chunky twisted ombre numbers – and thought Asda’s pink tin would be just right.

I think this candle looks like it will cost a fortune or come from a more expensive and trendy shop, but it’s only £2.50.

I’m a total neat freak and love that my home smells clean and pleasant at all times. Candles are great for providing a relaxing vibe while filling a space with a dreamy scent.

Asda’s Harmony Silk Rose & Cotton Candle does smell lovely, it’s a sweet and fresh floral scent that smells clean. It didn’t last as long as I had hoped, but at £2.50 I don’t think you can complain.
