WAYNESBORO, Mississippi (WDAM) – Valentine’s Day is about the miracle of love and a day to share special moments together.

Sadly, however, many older adults feel forgotten and alone at this time of year and can become depressed.

Students in the Ashlyn Smith class at Wayne Central School in Waynesboro are working on a project to bring Valentine’s Day love to more than a hundred seniors living in a nearby nursing home.

Ashlyn said the project included kids making Valentine’s Day cards and writing letters of encouragement to seniors living there.

She said she came up with the idea after talking to her grandfather, who was also a resident of the house, and hearing about how sad others were during Valentine’s Day.

“I just want people out there to know that they’re not forgotten, and even if they don’t have families, I can make my students feel loved because that’s one thing I want them to do,” she said.

Students will be making cards and letters this week and delivering in person next week.

For Ashlyn, who is in her first year at the school, the project also aims to teach her students the concept of giving back to community members in need.

“I want my students to be able to make someone feel loved this season of love. That’s my goal for my students and those in the nursing homes where we’re writing,” Smith said.

The Wayne Center School faculty and staff are committed to providing opportunities for students and their parents to actively participate in the educational process.
