Materials you need

    • construction drawings
    • caring
    • pencil
    • mark
    • Acrylic paint
    • 1 white crayon
    • liquid detergent
    • Optional: scissors and glue in case you want to add to your card design

Campanella started her Valentine’s Day scratch card with colorful construction paper she cobbled together, and using unpeeled heart stickers as a template, she traced it around with a pencil. Next, Campanella outlines the heart shape with a marker and writes messages inside and outside the shape.

“Make sure you customize this for your lover,” Campanella said, referring to the delineated heart.

Campanella then used white crayons and fully colored over the heart message.

“It’s going to be a barrier between your message and the paint that’s going to cover it,” she explained.

To create the scratched layer of the card, Campanella added a few drops of liquid dish soap and acrylic paint to a palette-like surface. Then she mixes it together until the two liquids blend smoothly.

“Don’t skip the soap,” warns Campanella. “I did try this without it and I had a hard time scraping off the paint.”

When the soap-and-paint mixture is ready, Campanella slathers every heartfelt message she creates until it’s completely hidden.

“Let it dry completely,” says Campanella. “Now you can give it your lover. Give them a coin and let them scratch it off so they can see what they’ve won.”
