Valentine’s Day 2022: Roses no longer popular as an alternative to native bouquets, says Perth florist

Roses are red and violets may be blue, but this Valentine’s Day local florists say people will be sending some new gifts.

Fox and Rabbit owner Rebecca Const said roses were considered the epitome of romance thanks to clever marketing, but most women preferred other options.

“Hydrangeas are great this time of year,” she says.

“For Perth’s summer weather, locals are always the enduring choice. Orchids and anthuriums are the ‘pop flowers’ beloved by modern women.”

Renowned florist Rebecca Grace of Perth Natural Art Flowers has also announced she will not be able to offer roses this Valentine’s Day due to the ongoing impact of the coronavirus.

It’s not just your local florist that encourages people to think outside the box. Australia’s largest online retailer of flowers and gifts, Roses Only, says the humble sunflower will be huge this year.

“Sunflowers are getting more and more popular, and we think their bright yellow petals and single large hair give a positive glow, something we all need right now,” said CEO Kelly Taggart, adding that roses will always have a place.

Similar to Const, she also predicts native plants, phalaenopsis, and reflex roses—the petals of high-quality roses that fold back to reveal a fuller, “blooming” rose—will be the flowers of choice.

If the thought of choosing from these alternative varieties causes stress, Const encourages people to use their local florist as a guide.

“And you can never go wrong with pairing flowers with wine, candles, chocolate and cake,” she says.

One trend that never goes out of style on Valentine’s Day is to be organized and make sure you always order your florals early, with a heartfelt note in mind.

“Keep the card message simple, honest and to the point. I love you, you always make me smile, my life is better without you, be my lover, now and forever, I’m glad you’re mine; always a winner ,” Const said.
