True Love on Valentine’s Day (2022)

💕

Today is Valentine’s Day, and many are marked by romantic dates, gifts of flowers and chocolates, and expressions of love to our significant other. Many people forget, to be more precise, St. Valentine’s Day (or St. Valentine’s Day). Saint Valentine of Rome, a third-century Roman saint, is commemorated on February 14, the day he was martyred and buried. It has been honored in this way since 496 AD.

So why do we associate his day with love?

The answer is surprisingly superficial. This has nothing to do with his life; he has no great stories of unrequited love or blessings for some young couple. As The New Catholic Encyclopedia notes, “The late medieval custom of sending love letters on St. Valentine’s Day may have stemmed from the belief that it marked the mating season for birds.” We’ve been using it in a similar fashion ever since. his commemoration.

Not exactly the material for a Hallmark Channel movie.

However, we should respect this day. Valentine was made a saint for persecuting Christians in Rome. He is revered not only by Catholics, but also by Anglicans, Lutherans and even Orthodox (though for the latter, his day falls on July 6). He should be respected by all Christians.

Although clearly in the camp of saint biographies, I still love the story about Valentine who was asked about the validity of Jesus while under house arrest. A judge decides to test Valentine and his faith by bringing the saint to the blind woman adopted by the judge. If Valentine can restore the girl’s sight, the judge will release him. Valentine put his hands on the girl’s eyes, and her vision returned immediately.

The judge was stunned and asked what he should do now. Valentine told him to destroy all his idols, fast for three days, and then be baptized. The judge not only followed this rule, but also released all imprisoned Christians in his jurisdiction.

Another biography of the saint – again one I can’t help but be drawn to – is how he died. Valentine was arrested for his (still) daring act of evangelism and sent to the Roman Emperor Claudius Gothicus to stand trial. When Valentine even tried to evangelize the emperor, he was told to either renounce his faith or be beaten with sticks and then beheaded.

Valentine refused to stop making Christ known.

He was subsequently executed on 14 February.

Our Valentine’s Day.

So send an expression of your love. But take a minute or two to go deeper than the post-it notes on the mirror, Godiva chocolates, and candlelit dinners, and remember the love that ran through the veins of Valentine himself, a love that still reverberates today.

It is not a man’s love for a woman, nor the mating of two birds, but a man’s love for God.
