Staunton, Va. (WHSV) – Community groups in Augusta County are collecting Valentine’s Day cards to send to seniors at 18 long-term care facilities in the Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro area.

The Facebook group “Love a Granny” and VFW post 7814 have partnered with schools, churches and the entire community to hold a card drive for the second year in a row.

Melissa Patrick, one of the organizers of VFW post 7814, said: β€œThe response from the community last year was fantastic, we received over 2,000 cards, so every senior in these facilities got a few. “

The goal is to collect over 1,000 cards so that every resident receives at least one.

“Getting these cards makes a lot of sense for seniors, there are many seniors in our care facilities who no longer have family support groups to support them, so receiving cards from the whole community is really special and exciting for them ,” said Patrick.

Patrick said about 700 cards have been collected and the final collection will take place on the afternoon of Wednesday, February 9.

“It’s really exciting to see how this community has come together to support each other, whether it’s this project or pretty much any other crisis or project or what have you, the people in this area are so supportive of me and I’m totally confident in what’s next We’ll have enough cards in two days to achieve our goals,” Patrick said.

  • staunton’s book dragon
