Project Hope Sends Love on Valentine’s Day

GULFPORT, Mississippi (WLOX) — In Gulfport, local churches are partnering with area nonprofits to ensure the homeless community has a Valentine’s Day to remember.

It’s all for Project Hope, what they’re doing at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Gulfport.

Those who do get a little bingo, a chance to eat, some fellowship, maybe a hot bath and a haircut.

St. Mark has been unable to do this for the past few years due to the pandemic. They do this with MGCCC cosmetology students at the Harrison County campus.

โ€œThis is where we start to see our skills emerge. We canโ€™t go out in public or work with clients at school, so many of us are excited to be able to do our hair on the go,โ€ says Jaclyn McCoy.

Some say it could be called Valentine’s Day Spa Day.

“They can have clothes, food and other supplies and be loved throughout the day,” said Kimberly Balta, director of the Southern Mississippi Mental Health Program.

St. Mark’s also works with the Southern Mississippi Mental Health Association and Gulf Coast Community Ministries.
