A romantic Valentine’s reunion at a luxury resort for an estranged couple ended in horror when the husband allegedly murdered his ex-wife.

Jeff Godfrey, 50, of Pack A Punch cleaning services, allegedly killed his wife Vanessa, 46, at the Pelican Waters resort on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast on Monday.

At around 3.35pm, after failing to check out, the staff found the bloody body of the grandmother on the bed in the room and called the police immediately.

Her husband was found in a coma nearby with minor injuries that did not require hospital treatment. He was arrested at the scene.

Detective Inspector Dave Drinen said the couple attended a social event at the resort over Valentine’s Day weekend.

Neighbors in the building reported hearing the two arguing and singing love songs loudly at a two-day party that apparently was lively in the room.

But when they didn’t check out on Monday afternoon, staff walked into the room to a horrific sight.

“She was covered in blood and had a wound on her arm,” he said. “Obviously, she’s dead.

“We suspect that some kind of weapon was used to create these wounds.”

He added: “It was very scary for the staff.

“We have a very unfortunate and very tragic incident in which a woman died bleeding and don’t know what happened.

“It’s going to be very distressing for anyone participating.”

Detectives are conducting forensic examinations and autopsies to determine the exact cause of death and any clues leading to the suspected murder.

The couple are believed to have at least one grandchild and until recently lived and worked together in their Caloundra-based home cleaning business.

Ms Godfrey celebrated the couple’s 24th wedding anniversary in an online post to her husband in 2019.

“To the absolute love of my life, when I met you at 17, I couldn’t imagine the life we’d create and build together,” she wrote on Facebook.

“You are my best friend, my love, my partner and my drinking buddy.

“I am grateful to share my life with you. I love you more than these words and life itself, my beautiful husband.

Godfrey recently changed his Facebook marriage status to single, but the couple plans to reunite at the $250-a-night resort on Valentine’s Day.

Police said they would investigate the relationship between the two before being suspected of murder.

Detective Inspector Drinnen said: “We will look at the family dynamics on both sides, what is the situation, but this is all part of an investigation that we are still working on and working on together.”

“We have a woman who lost her life and we have a man who is now charged with murder.

‘There will be a lot of mourning. In this regard, support needs to be built around all family members. This is just another tragic loss of life.

“Police allege staff from the Mahogany Drive resort arrived at the couple’s room about 3.35pm for a welfare check,” a Queensland Police spokesman said.

“The woman’s body was in the room as was the man. Police were notified and rushed to the scene immediately after arresting the man at the scene.

Godfrey was refused bail to appear in Maroochydore Local Court on Tuesday.
