Love it or leave it:

Valentines Day Costa Rica

Love it or leave it:

There seem to be two schools of thought when it comes to Valentine’s Day: love it or leave it. Older generations who have been through a divorce or two are a little tired of all the romance unfolding in the weeks leading up to February 14th.

However, the younger generation has great expectations.

unscientific investigation

A somewhat unscientific investigation in pulp (neighborhood store) and Bistro A rural (watering hole) in Alajuela province northwest of San Jose attests to this.

Bar owner admits to buying a lot of flowers for his wife before marriage; now, it’s a different story. “What? I’ve won her over,” he said. But one customer said he had been bringing his wife flowers and “things”. He doesn’t need a special day.

A wife and mother in their 30s responded, “¡Quéva!Before the wedding, her husband gave her jewelry and she washed his T-shirt. But, she admits, there was always something like a piece of candy.

For another woman, it was a day of friendship. She calls friends she doesn’t see often or invites them over for coffee. However, her college daughter expects her roses Novio on Valentine’s Day.

“It’s so commercial,” said another woman who avoided the day. But a couple married for five years plans to spend the weekend at the beach. Wife remembers her mother giving children “little gifts” on Valentine’s Day.

A 5-year-old boy in pulpería doesn’t know what to buy for his two girlfriends. He’s thinking about snacks. The family is going out for dinner. “But that’s because it’s a weekend,” they explained.

Those out shopping will find a wide variety of gift options, from plush toys of all sizes, pillows with proverbs, knickknacks, candies and wall hangings to heart-printed underpants, as well as traditional chocolates and flowers.

History of Valentine’s Day

The history of Valentine’s Day may be more myth than truth, originating in Rome in the third century, when Emperor Claudius forbade young people to marry.

They were what his huge army needed, how could they conquer Gaul or whatever, while mourning for their lover in Rome? Pastor Valentine defied the ban and held an illegal wedding. He was jailed for falling in love with the jailer’s daughter and sending her a signed “your lover” note. He was executed in AD 270 and canonized by Pope Glasius in AD 498.

Meanwhile, in Rome, Ides in February (February 15) is the Faun Day, dedicated to fertility and celebrated with glee. Young men cut the goatskin strips and slapped the ladies with their robes. Instead of complaining, they welcomed the sport.

Fertility is here!

In the Middle Ages, mid-February was again about sex, because that was when the birds came together. Romance literature associates love with Valentine’s Day.

Around the 1830s, the first Valentine’s Day cards decorated with lace and ribbon appeared in the United States.

In Costa Rica, this day was once Diadlos Inamorados (Valentine’s Day), now celebrated as diadra amistad (Friendship Day).
