Local Valentine’s Day Memories dating back to 2013, then some

Update, February 14, 2022 / Again, readers have been searching this site for “Valentine’s Day.” We also just did a “Valentine’s Day” search.

We also look back, with fond memories, to a visit to a museum in London some 15 years ago, where a Victorian Valentine’s Day show featured lizards and frogs antics and sometimes sad meanness. The postcard below is more attentive!

Valentine’s Day greetings from local historian Brian Auger!

A brief description of some historical records of local lovebirds dating back to the Middle Ages (500 to 1500 in Europe), people in France and England consider February 14th as the start of the bird mating season, creating a romantic day. Earlier today in Naperville, Illinois, birds chirped loudly in the trees outside our window. to find out.

The English poet Geoffrey Chaucer, in his 1381-82 poem “The Poultry Council,” referred to St. Valentine’s Day as a day of romantic celebration. In fact, the poem was written before the printing press and was one of the first to mention Valentine’s Day as a special day for lovers.

At the time, Chaucer wrote: “Because this was sent on the day of Seynt Valentyne / When every fowl comes here to choose his mate.”

Valentine’s Day greetings were popular as early as the Middle Ages, although written Valentine’s Day didn’t appear until after 1400.

Continuing to dig, the history of Valentine’s Day yields a variety of stories, sometimes dating back to 270 AD.Some historians trace it back to a festival in ancient Rome called Faun. Others believe it began with the saints of the early Christian church. Trust the birds to choose their mates on February 14th and create a captivating love story to tell every day.

News reports in 2022 suggest that Valentine’s Day will cost over $24 billion.
