LIMA, Feb 14 (Reuters) – Cynthia Ceballos celebrated Valentine’s Day in the Peruvian capital Lima on Monday not about her own love life: it was about the marriage of her two fluffy little white dogs .

Dressed in Andean-inspired outfits, Ceballos’ dog was the winner of Lima’s MatriCan — a play on the Spanish words “wedding” and “dog” — a local competition that celebrated their impending marriage by dressing the dogs.

“I saw the Andean wedding and said, ‘Why can’t I do the same with my puppy?’ Ceballos said.

Mass weddings are common in Peru, especially on Valentine’s Day. For Peruvians who can’t afford their own weddings, it’s a way to celebrate and ensure their union is legally recognized. Massive dog weddings are just a twist on tradition.

Some dogs wear more traditional outfits – a bow tie for the groom and a white bell dress for the bride. Others wore brightly coloured summer attire for the hot season in the southern hemisphere. One owner even put a veil on one of the dogs.

The owners then help their dogs sign the marriage documents by raising their paws and pressing them to the paper. Finally, the dog and the owner took a group photo together.

“We’ve married 8 pairs of dogs on this very special day, and it’s a day of love and friendship,” said Patricia Ballari of Lima Park Service, which organized the event. Say.

“They’ve already received their marriage certificates…We had a really good time with the owners who brought four-legged friends,” Ballari said.
