Romance month is here. After a week of loving celebrations, the big day will be celebrated on February 14th. Valentine’s Day is of great significance to those in love, and people express their love for their significant other on this day. While most of us celebrate the day with fancy dinner dates, flowers, and gifts, let’s take a look at its origins.

It is believed that Valentine’s Day originated in ancient Rome, when the Faun was celebrated from February 13th to February 15th. In these days, men sacrificed a goat and a dog, while women were whipped with the skins of the sacrificed animals because it was believed that this would make them fertile.

During the festival, there will also be a blind date raffle. The man would draw the woman’s name from the jar and would marry that woman even longer during the festival.

Although Faun is a common ceremony, it only got its name from Valentine’s Day in the 3rd century AD. Emperor Claudius II ordered the execution of Saint Valentine, a priest who helped Christian couples marry. Emperor Claudius II opposed the marriage of single men and ordered the beheading of Saint Valentine. The execution took place on February 14. St. Valentine is said to have cared for the jailer’s blind daughter while in custody, and even wrote her a card that read “From your Valentine.”

In the 5th century AD, Pope Glasius expelled the pagan rite of Faun and combined it with St. Valentine. Once pagan rituals disappeared, St. Valentine’s Day celebrations became more romantic in nature. This holiday becomes all about love and intimacy. Popular poets like Geoffrey Chaucer and William Shakespeare are also beginning to popularize today by writing sweet words about love and passion.

Homemade cards are exchanged for symbols of love and gratitude. This tradition entered the 19th century and the Industrial Revolution made it possible to produce many cards for the occasion. Since then, Valentine’s Day has been celebrated graciously, showing love to loved ones by exchanging cards, gifts and flowers.
