A co-defendant accused of helping a prominent Minnesota Republican donor recruit underage girls for sex will spend Valentine’s Day with her family at her parents’ home.

Gisela Medina’s attorneys filed a motion Tuesday in U.S. District Court for permission to leave the halfway house on Feb. 14 to spend Valentine’s Day at her parents’ home. Neither the U.S. government nor her probation officer objected, and U.S. District Judge David Schultz signed the request on Wednesday.

Medina was indicted on August 16 last year on seven counts related to child sex trafficking. She is charged as a co-defendant along with Anton Lazzaro, a Republican operative accused by federal prosecutors of child sex trafficking. The allegations say Medina helped Lazaro connect with the victim.

She has pleaded not guilty.

On Valentine’s Day, Medina will travel from the end of therapy (ends around 2:30pm) to her home, where she can stay until the evening. According to the judge’s order, Medina must be back at the halfway house by 9 p.m.; not be with alcohol or any minors other than her siblings; and must respond to calls as instructed by the halfway house.

The motion said the court had previously granted Medina’s request to go home for Thanksgiving, Christmas and birthdays, and that she “complied with all conditions” during her previous leave.

A motion hearing in the Medina case is scheduled for February 17.
