Florists gear up for Valentine’s Day rush

💕

SALISBURY, Md – Valentine’s Day usually means big sales for florists, but many flower boutiques say things can be complicated this year. Certain flowers are becoming harder to come by, they say, as California growers are behind schedule and they are dealing with shortages of bouquet pins, boxes and even wrapping paper.
Sonya’s Floral Boutique in Salisbury said they had been stocking up for months in anticipation of shortages, but customers should still accept alternatives when shopping for gifts.
They also say there have been price increases at every step of the process, with many florists having to raise their prices to make ends meet.

“Everything is double the price, everything is double the price of jars and containers, and shipping is double for us, so 20 years ago you could get a bouquet for 20-30, today it’s 50, and that’s where it starts, because our prices have to go up because wholesalers have come up,” said florist Stacey Cashel.

Sonya’s Floral Boutique also says that many online companies that order flowers through local suppliers may not have the latest prices and stocks, and you should check with your local florist first.
