Father’s Day 2021 date: When is Father’s Day in the USA and UK?
Father’s Day is a celebration held across the world to honour dads, paternal bonds and the influence of fathers across the globe. This special day allows children to celebrate and commemorate the influence of their dads, showing them how much they love and appreciate them in a similar vein to other days dedicated to family members such as Mother’s Day, Siblings Day and Grandparents’ Day. But when is Father’s Day and does the date change every year?
When was the first Father’s Day?
The original Father’s Day is disputed with several different accounts discussed.
The two main theories relate to two American girls named Grace Golden Clayton and Sonora Smart Dodd.
Grace Golden Clayton from Fairmount, West Virginia, had lost her father in the Monongah Mining Disaster of 1907, which killed 361 men, 250 of which were fathers.
Their deaths orphaned more than 1,000 children and Grace wanted to pay tribute to the children’s dead fathers – as well as her own.
Ms Clayton suggested to her pastor Robert Thomas Webb there be a day to honour these fathers – which is one theory behind the conception of Father’s Day.
The other theory relates to Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane in Washington, whose father was a civil war veteran.
Miss Smart Dodd’s father was a single father who raised six children.
Wanting to honour her father after hearing a sermon about Jarvis’ Mother’s Day in 1909, she proposed a dedicated father’s day take place on June 5, which was her father’s birthday.
However, the pastors at her church did not have enough time to organise their sermons for this date and instead the celebration was deferred until the third Sunday in June.
Several local clergymen accepted this idea and June 19, 1910, became the first official Father’s Day.
When is Father’s Day this year?
This year, Father’s Day falls on Sunday, June 16 – that’s this weekend.
The UK, Ireland, the US, France, Cyprus, South Africa, the Netherlands, Greece, Japan, Canada and Saudi Arabia celebrate Father’s Day every June on the third Sunday.
Whereas other locations celebrate on different days which have significance to them, for instance, Australia, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand celebrate their Father’s Day in September and in Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal and Croatia, Father’s Day is celebrated in March.
How was the date for Father’s Day decided?
During the early years of Fathers’ Days several attempts to have the holiday formally recognised were attempted and failed.
Fifty-six years after the first official Father’s Day, President Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as the day when dad’s should be celebrated.
Six years later, Father’s Day was made a permanent national holiday in the US when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.
Every since that time, Father’s Day has been celebrated on the third Sunday of June which means it will change each year.
