Jarolsav Zigo, 29, of Union Square, pleaded guilty to the theft at Lidl on Tawney Street and assaulting an employee as he appeared in Boston District Court.

Indicting, Marie Stace said Zigo entered Lidl on February 14 and was seen taking wine and flowers and was followed by a staff member.

She said staff asked him to hand over the items, which he complied with and then tried to escort him out of the store, but Zigo yelled at him to hit him, tried to head butt him and then punched him in the nose.

He was interviewed after he was arrested by police and said he had been drinking and could not remember what happened, but admitted what he had done when he saw it on CCTV images. Ms Stace said he had previous convictions for shoplifting.

To moderate, Tony Davis said Ziggo was drunk at the time and was trying to offer his girlfriend a Valentine’s Day gift.

The magistrate adjourned the case on March 9 and asked the Probation Service to provide a pre-sentence report.

He was granted conditional bail not to enter Lidl or its car park.
