Be Romantic and Restaurant – Pasadena Weekend

The time gets louder as the day draws nearer. This has nothing to do with a football game in the Southern California area this weekend.

Think further, Romeo. So are you, Juliet.

Monday, February 14th is Valentine’s Day. Now, according to, there are at least three different recognized saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.

One legend is that Valentine was a priest who served in Rome in the third century. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men would make better soldiers than those with wives and families, he forbade young people to marry.

Valentine doesn’t have that. He despised Claudius and went on to have a secret marriage for his young lover. When he was arrested, Claudius ordered him to be executed.

But others insist that it is this other person, Bishop St. Valentine of Terni, who is the real namesake of the festival. He was also beheaded by Claudius II outside Rome.

There were many stories and legends of the day, and they all culminated in you and your love finding a special place to have a romantic dinner somewhere like Pasadena.

So, in that spirit, we’ve handpicked seven locations for you to spend that special night. The only criterion is that we have been to all of them and can vouch for how unique and romantic they are.

Now, in no particular order, here are seven places to get your heart pumping.

Raymond 1886

This secluded original 1886 artisan home is one of our favorites, from the outdoor courtyard to the slightly dimly lit room, complete with a modern American menu. Raymond’s Bar will provide your loved one with something special to commemorate the day and night. They also have a romantic four-course set menu for the two of you on Valentine’s Day because they know you’re coming.

You will find yourself back again, on a non-holiday that will be as special as you are.

Langham Terrace

Situated beside the magnificent Scenic Bridge and swimming pool of the historic Langham Huntington Hotel, The Terrace is a comfortable place to spend your evenings. Even if you’re not staying, the beautifully manicured grounds are perfect for evening walks. With two nights to go until the “Snow Moon” in February, the moonlight is enough to create a little romance.

The Langham Huntington, 1401 South Oak Knoll Avenue, Pasadena, CA.

Santorini Cafe

Located on the rooftop of the One Colorado courtyard in historic Old Pasadena, Café Santorini offers Mediterranean cuisine, cocktails and an extensive wine list. Their indoor dining room is comfortable and private, while their large balcony offers an al fresco dining experience with views of Old Pasadena’s beautiful brick alleys. Happy hour is also available at the bars of the Santorini Cafe. It’s a lovely place to keep Goo Goo’s eyes on the lamp on Valentine’s night.

Santorini Cafe, 64 Union Street. Pasadena, CA 91103. (626) 564-4200.

Gale Restaurant

We love Gale every day of the year, so Valentine’s Day must be great, right? From Puttanesca sauce to extraordinary coconut cake, their Northern Italian fare is every comfort food invited, we only allow ourselves to eat twice a year. It might just be time.

452 Fair Oaks Avenue, Pasadena, CA. (626) 432-6705.

Mi Piace has been a Pasadena community favorite for decades. It features an award-winning kitchen, bakery and lounge, and is known for its light Italian cooking and New York specialities. .

Designed by New York designer Tony Chi, Mi Piace’s décor is reminiscent of Manhattan’s Mulberry Street or TriBeca’s Italian restaurant, with its sleek martini lounge, stainless steel bar, glowing tables and red leather sofas.

This is a great place to go on a Sunday afternoon. Valentine’s Day is bound to be even better.

MiPiace, 25 East Colorado Avenue, Pasadena, CA. (626) 795-3131

Il Fornaio

When we think of Il Fornaio, we think of white tablecloths, sparkling wine glasses, spacious venue settings and attentive service. In the One Colorado yard, there is always something about the setting that feels like a romance, or at least a special occasion. From Bruschetta Al Salmone Affumicato to Grigliata Di Pesce Misto or Casonzei Alla Zucca, we have never been disappointed. We don’t think you will either.

Il Fornaio, 24 West Union Street, Pasadena, CA. (626) 683-9797.

Entre Nous French Bistro

Jean-Christophe Febbrari and Mathias Wakrat have teamed up again to create a unique and authentic French bistro in downtown Pasadena.

Entre Nous translates to “between us”, and the dishes and flavors on the menu are reminiscent of their home in Provence, where both men came from.

The wine list offers common French varieties as well as selections influenced by their family and international travels.

If the French don’t know romance, who does?
