ATF urges people to give exes a ‘Valentine’s Day surprise’ by handing them over

The Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Authority (ATF) is giving disgruntled exes a chance to hand over their ex-partners this Valentine’s Day.

In a tweet, the ATF urged people to share information about their former or current partners if they were involved in illegal gun activity.

“Valentine’s Day is still fun, even if you’ve broken up. Do you have information about a former (or current) partner who was involved in illegal gun activity?” the ATF said.

“Let us know and we’ll make sure it’s a Valentine’s Day to remember!”

Some online commentators urged the ATF to reconsider the tweet, saying it encouraged people to “smack” their exes and could lead to false reporting.

The Nash County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina shared a similar post on Facebook asking people this Valentine’s Day to turn in a former partner who has an outstanding search warrant against them.

The tweet, retweeted by the Justice Department, comes amid a White House push to reduce gun crime.

The Justice Department last year deployed “gun trafficking units” in Chicago, New York City and other areas with high rates of gun violence. The department reported last month that strike forces had seized thousands of firearms.

The Biden administration has also pushed executive action to curb the use of so-called ghost guns, which can be assembled by users at home and are difficult to trace.

A Biden administration still faces challenges in implementing its gun violence agenda. The White House withdrew Biden’s nomination of ATF chief David Chipman in September and has yet to propose a new nominee.
