5 Games to Play During a Super Bowl or Football Party

Don’t let the professional athletes have all the fun at your next football party. Plan a few activities to give your guests a chance to stretch, move around, and socialize a bit during halftime or commercial breaks. You can even stock up on some prizes for your games, such as mini footballs, drink cups, or team clothing, to up the ante and bring out your guests’ competitive side. Ultimately the idea of playing a few football-related games is to increase the camaraderie among your guests, especially if some of them don’t know each other well, and to make some fun memories.

Here are five games that are perfect to play during a football watch party.

Football Tossing Contest

Take inspiration from the quarterbacks on TV, and challenge your guests to a football tossing contest. If you have space to play outdoors, make the contest so the person who can toss a football the farthest wins. If it needs to be an indoor contest, use a foam football and challenge your guests to toss it through a hoop, into a basket, or at another target. The winner is the guest who can hit your intended target the most times out of five attempts.

Football Charades

Divide your guests into even teams, and offer each player a card with a football-related term that you’ve prepared in advance. Here are some word options to get the ideas flowing: helmet, football, touchdown, referee, coach, field goal, mascot, and end zone. Then, it’s a typical game of charades where everyone takes a turn trying to get their team to guess their football-related word by acting it out. The team that correctly guesses the most words wins. Set a time limit for each player to keep the game from running too long and interrupting the football game on TV.

Don’t Say ‘Football’ Game

At the beginning of halftime, give your guests small paper footballs to stick onto their chests with double-sided tape. Tell everyone they’re not allowed to say the word “football” while in conversation until the end of halftime. If a guest hears someone use the word, they can take the paper football from the offending party. The person who collects the most footballs is the winner. A fitting prize for this game would be an actual football for the guest to take home.

Football Bean Bag Toss

Set up a quick competition for your guests with a football-themed bean bag toss. Mark a small football field either inside or outside with masking tape, including the yardage as it will be necessary for scoring the game. Divide your guests into two teams, set them up at each end of the field, and have players take turns tossing bean bags onto the other team’s side of the field. Keep score of the yardage where the bags land. The goal is to hit a low yardage number or to land in the end zone for a touchdown, which is zero points in this game. If a player’s bean bag lands off the field, assign the toss 20 penalty points. The team with the lowest total yardage after all of the players have taken a turn wins.

Hot Football

If you have kids at your football party (or adults who are young at heart), organize a game of hot potato with a football. Have everyone sit in a circle and toss the football to each other while you play music. Stop the music at random points. The player who’s left holding the football when the music stops is out and must leave the circle. Continue this way until only one player is left. That person is the winner. Instead of playing music, another option is to play this game during commercial breaks and the person left holding the football when the commercial is over is out.
